Crumlin v Risca

Crumlin 18 pts Risca 17 pts.

Risca treavelled to Crumlin to play one of their postponed league games., losing their unbeaten record for the season 18 pts to 17 pts.
Scott Mitchell returned to centre and Rhys Morgan to inside half, Alex Yule came in at tight head.
Risca started well and from the kick off Crumlin conceded a penalty about 40m out wide and Rhys Carpenter obliged with a big kick all the enterprize was coming from Risca, but Crumlins pack dominated the scrum's. Strong play by Gareth Smith and Richard Evans made good in roads into Crumlin's defence and another penalty by Carpenter from way out kept Crumlin under pressure. But after 25 minutes Crumlin worked their way into Risca's 22m some poor tackling by Risca and Crumlins No 8 punched his way through to create a good try which was converted.
Risca then had their best opportunity to get a try when Barnes and Bushell created an opening to put Leighton Jones in at the corner but the ball was lost on the line. Two more penalties by Carpenter on the 36 and 38 mintutes took Risca into the lead, but once again Risca's tackling let them down and a repeat performance by Crumlins No 8 burst through Risca's defence for another try to make it all square at 12 pts each at half time whistle.

Crumlin continued to dominate through their pack and Risca conceded another penalty, but Risca came straight back with an excellent break out of defence by Chris Fraser but he was tackled into touch. Risca now pushing hard into Crumlin's territory and Carpenter failed with 2 easy penalties. Riacs's pack now coming to life and with  three 5m scrums Risca then got a excellent push over try by Evans to take the lead, but denied in the end by Crumlins penalty right on time. Risca's tackling was woeful at times  and with Carpenter failing with the easy kicks (After kicking the difficult ones) it was a day to forget.
Risca play Nantyglo on Friday evening Kick off 7 PM.

.

Risca V Nantyglo

Risca 22pts  Nantyglo 12pts

Risca entertained Nantyglo at the stores field last Friday night with a catch up on another postponed game.
Risca made some positional changes with Scott Mitchell to outside half, Chad Bushell to centre and Rhys Carpenter to full back.

Risca got on the score card after eight  minutes with an excellent try which started on the Risca twenty-two metre line, they were awarded a penalty and scrum half David Jefferson took a quick tap and go and go he did with a blistering run carved his way through the retiring defenders and with Steve Barnes on his shoulder to put Craig Thomas in the corner for a cracker, converted by Rhys Carpenter from the touch line. Once gain Risca's scrum was found wanting and early pressure up front caused a scrum to collapse and Risca's prop Alex Yule was laid out. The game was stopped for thirty-five minutes while having attention by the paramedics and ambulance which then took him to hospital.
The game resumed and the only other score in the first half was a long range penalty by Rhys Carpenter. Half time Risca 10 pts Nantyglo Nil

Straight from the kick off the Nantyglo's pack steam rolled over Risca's pack and drove  into the corner for a try which was not converted, but minutes later Risca struck back for a good try. Risca got a rare quick strike at a scrum just inside the Nantyglo half and it was Jefferson who done the damage with a scorching blind side break taking him to the five metre line and putting Thomas in for his second try, which went unconverted.
Nantyglo camped in the Risca twenty-two but Risca 's defence was excellent with Richard Evans, Ty Morris and Gareth Smith an outstanding back row, and with a devastating tackle by Ty Morris caused a turn over and with the ball loose Carpenter used all his soccer skills to get into the Nantyglo half and Gareth Smith picked up to score under the posts, converted by Carpenter . But the Glo hit back to get a consolation try right on time.
Risca's MEN OF THE MATCH. Richard Evans and David Jefferson.
N/B Alex Yule was discharged from Hospital after a full check up.

Pyle V Risca

SWALEC CUP 5th ROUND

Ple 7pts Risca 17pts

Risca travelled west to play Pyle in the 5ht round of the SWALEC Cup., and went forward to the quarter finals with a hard fought victory.

Rhys Morgan ,Sean Rees and Phil Jones returned to the starting fifteen on rota.
Within three minutes Risca were on the score board with a good penalty by Rhys Carpenter. Risca were trying to run the ball at every opportunity, but Pyle wanted to slow it down and keep the ball up front, and from a driving maul the Pyle outside half got good ball and attempted to drop goal which hit the post and rebounded back into play and with the outside half following picked up a favourable bounce and trotted in under the posts. The conversion was successful. The battle continued up front and it was no place for the faint hearted.    Pyle were starting to lose their discipline and Scott Mitchell pushed them back into their twenty-two with an excellent line kick.   Just on twenty eight minutes David Jefferson broke clear and put Mitchell into space who then put Steve Barnes in for an excellent try, Which was converted by Craig Thomas. Half Time Score Pyle 7 pts Risca 10 pts.
The game continued in a similar fashion in the second half, Risca failing to put anything constructive together and up front it was ( Handbags at dawn) most of the time.
Risca got a foothold in Pyle's twenty-two metre area, drove into the  five metre's area, a line-out and a drive to the line got pulled down, Risca opted for the scrum, Pyle pulled the scrum down and the Ref went straight for the posts for a penalty try, which was converted by Thomas.
From the resulting brawl Pyle obtained two red cards.
The remaining eight minutes were played in the Risca twenty-two metre area and Pyle just failed to score with two great tackles by Rhys Morgan denying them at the death. Young substitute Geraint Rowlands made his debut at prop and done a great job in the last five scrums.

Risca settled for the win and are still licking their wounds. Rhys Morgan named Man of the match with some great tackling.

Risca v Chepstow.

Risca 27 pts Chepstow 18 pts.

Risca welcomed Chepstow to the stores field and run out winners by 27 pts to 18 pts getting their first double of the season and closing the gap on talywain to one point in division four East.

With Nicky Davies having to work Geraint Rowland retained his spot at loose head, and Owen Coomer made his 3rd start of the season on the left wing.

Risca started with a bang and with some excellent chasing by Gareth Smith Chepstow conceded a penalty at the breakdown and Rhys Carpenter obliged from 40 metres, But playing on a Mucky pudding of a pitch was always going to favour Chepstow's heavy pack. After ten minutes Risca took another penalty by Carpenter. Chepstow were getting more into the game and Risca conceded two penalties within ten minutes both kicked by No 10 T.. Bailey.

After 30 minutes and Risca still under pressure Chad Bushell picked up the ball and beat the first up tackler, put a huge kick up and with Richard Evans in good support, Evans robbed Chepstow, full back and fed Bushell who danced in under the posts for a good try , converted by Carpenter. Half Time Risca 13 points Chepstow 6 points.

After the break Risca continued to dominate and within 7 minutes Risca were camped on the Chepstow line , after three consecutive scrums Risca pushed Chepstow over and Richard Evans got the touch down duly converted by Carpenter.

With the Risca's pack dominating with an excellent front row of Rowlands ,Owen Cooper and Sean Rees doing an excellent job which kept them on the front foot. The next try came when Ty Morris ripped through two tacklers and handing over to Rees who made excellent excellent ground before feeding Jefferson who put Coomer away and a good try right on the corner flag. Carpenter converted right from the touch line. Risca again took their foot off the pedal and made school boy errors, but Chepstow had not given in and they rattled Risca with two late tries. Abercarn v Risca

Abercarn 0  Risca 21 pts.

Risca travelled the short distance to Abercarn. But it was not a good advert for Rugby in a game where the referee's whistle was the dominant factor in front of a very large crowd, with Risca winning 21 pts to nil.
Craig Thomas continued on the wing instead of Chris Fraser who had work commitments. Nicky Davies returned at loose head.
The first 15 minutes were totally dominated by Abercarn who should have been 15 pts in the lead at that point .but Mathew Johnson had left his boots in the house and Risca finally got into Abercarns territory, with a fine kick by Rhys Carpenter putting Risca on Aber's 5 mt line, the drive from the line was brought down and from the resulting scrum Risca drove over and Richard Evans got the touch down,
the kick failed against the wind. the game continued in the same vain the only ones that stood out were the Risca back row of Ty Morris, Richard Evans and Gareth Smith and of course the referee.
Risca conceded 10 penalties and Abercarn 2 penalties in the first half which ended with Chad Bushell in the sin bin for descent.

After the interval it was all Risca and Abercarn started to loose their discipline, with in 15 minutes with Risca in total control Carpenter had punished them with 3 superb penalties.
Abercarn briefly got back into the game with some good running by Ben Farley but it was all snuffed out by an excellent Risca defence.

Abercarn then seen RED with Johnson having his marching orders and Risca immediately scored a cracking try, a quick ball from the 22m line. Jefferson to Carpenter who put a great pass to Chad Bushell who cut the line perfectly to go under the posts with Carpenter providing the extra's.

Risca 22 pts Pontardawe 27 pts,.

Risca hosted Pontardawe in the quarter final of the S.W.A.L.E.C. BOWL,

But after dominating possession and territory for most of the game came up short on the final whistle losing out 22 pts to 27 pts.

Risca dominated the early exchanges with the forwards dominating possession from very strong scrum age and the line out working at its very best of the season.   Captain Tim Barnes and Gareth Smith were outstanding, Jamie Walker and Steve Barnes  made excellent inroads into Ponty’s territory and they conceded a penalty which Rhys Carpenter slotted over from wide out. Ponty replied immediately with a long range penalty, and for the next 30 minutes Risca camped in the Ponty’s 22, but only came away with two more penalties.   With Risca pressing hard a loose pass saw left wing Mathew Edwards make an interception and skinned everyone to run 90 mts under the posts, which was converted. Risca struck straight back with another penalty by Carpenter.

Half Time Risca 12 pts Pontardawe 10 pts.

After the interval Ponty went in front with a long range penalty Gareth Smith gained super ball and with Alyn Evans and Tyron Morris in support nearly got over the line but Ponty’s defence was not going to be breached.    Carpenter came up with another penalty and then 23 minutes into the second half Risca got the try they were looking for. From a scrum 10 mts out Rhys Morgan went blind and with a good pass put Craig Thomas in the corner which was converted by Carpenter from the touch line.   Risca thought they were home but Ponty had other ideas and again from a Risca attack Pontys wing  Mathews gave a repeat performance from 80 mts which was converted and with the clock running out Risca’s  received a yellow card which was not deserved at all.

Ponty scored a winning try and converted right in time.

With Carpenters 5 penalties and a conversion giving him 17 pts and taking him to a total of 192 pts for the season and outstanding performance by Gareth Smith up front joint men of the match.

Risca v Monmouth

Risca 29 pts Monmouth 20 pts.

Risca quickly returned to action on Tuesday with a rearranged game against Monmouth.  Rhys Potter returned to full back after injury and what a atrocious night it was.

With driving rain and a pudding of a pitch Risca took the lead after 10 minutes with a brilliant try by Rhys Morgan from 40 mts out. Morgan picked up a loose ball from a scrum and was under the posts in a flash, with the conversion by Carpenter. Within minutes a forward drive by Nicky Davis produced good ball and Steve Barnes also got in under the posts, for Carpenter to get the extra's. But just on half time the Monmouth scrum had the nudge from 5 mts and got a converted try.

Risca then made some sub/changes which paid off, but Monmouth scored next with a try and a penalty.

Carpenter chipped in with a penalty for Risca and a great run by Salideno produced a try by prop Nicky Davies, converted by Carpenter. Ty Morris then drove through and this produced a try for debut prop Tom Dumelow.

Right on time Monmouth's pack produced another try which was converted.

.

Nantyglo v Risca

Nantyglo 16 pts Risca 27 pts.

Risca defended well and scored two exciting tries in a hard fought win over Nantyglo, but it was the excellent boot of Rhys Carpenter which kept  Risca's scoreboard ticking over.

With the injuries piling up Risca called on Daniel Dark, Jake Knapman and Craig Thomas, they also included Rhys Potter for his second game of the season. Luke Martin playing up front for his first game of the season.
Risca kicked off and immediately put Nantyglo under pressure and Carpenter kicked a long range goal from wide out but Nantyglo struck straight back with a good long range effort. A ding dong battle developed up front which suited Glo's heavy pack, but the discipline of both side's went and in the last minutes of the first half Risca's Levan Fairclough and Steve Barnes were both in the sin bin.   Now down to 13 men Risca played their best rugby so far with Tim Barnes, Gareth Smith, Alyn Evans and Ty Morris working overtime, this brought great rewards when Carpenter kicked two penalties before half time and just failing with one that hit the post.

Straight after the break Nantyglo kicked one more penalty and Carpenter again returned the favour.   Risca started to play some rugby.  A good drive through by Ty Morris and with Owen Cooper on his shoulder inter passing with Gareth Smith back to Cooper and then Alyn Evans who scored a great try wide out, the kick failed from the touch line.  Within minutes Risca struck again when Rhy's Potter opened up from his own half with a good run, broke two attempted tackles, the ball went to Barnes who chipped on and Potter won the race for the try, converted by Carpenter.   But Nantyglo had not finished their left wing exploited Risca's frail defence out wide to score two individual tries. This was sandwiched with another penalty by Carpenter.

Risca's MAN OF THE MATCH was CAPTAIN TIM BARNES.
Risca will play Crumlin at home next Saturday.

.

Risca welcomed back Chad Bushell and Chris Freaser after injury.
It was 10 minutes on the clock before Risca got on the score board with a penalty by Rhys Carpenter, with Risca starting to exert more pressure through the back row of Ty Morris, Richard Evans and Alyn Evans they had Crumlins defence in a tangle. From the next scrum Rhy's Carpenter  put Thomas in the corner for his first try.The kick just failed from the touch line.  Within three minutes Steve Barnes picked up a loose ball in the middle of the park and with Thomas on his shoulder he outstripped Crumlins defence for try No 2. Carpenter took the extra's. Just on the half hour Carpenter opened up from his own half, beat a couple of wood be tacklers, chipped over the top of a couple more, picked up a good bounce to put Chad Bushell in under the posts, Carpenter converted.
Ht Risca 22 pts Crumlin Nil.

After the break Crumlin tried hard to get into the game but Risca's dominant front five made sure this was not going to happen. Tim Barnes and Gareth Smith absolutely cleaning out every ball and every line out, which kept Risca always on the front foot. A brilliant move from Crumlins 22 mts and a great miss pass put Rhys Potter in under the posts, Carpenter took the conversion. With a  scrum just inside Crumlins half David Jefferson opened up to Carpenter to Ty Morris who went clear to put Thomas in for his hat trick try in the corner. it was left to the forwards to get the final score. This was scored by Luke Martin with a good drive over under the posts, converted by Carpenter.

Risca travelled to St Josephs (Cardiff) and had to grind out a hard fought victory. St Joe's 12 pts Risca 22pts, after Risca's crushing defeat of Monmouth by 69 Pts to nil last Wednesday evening.

But this victory was very important and kept Risca in 2nd place to Abertillery B.G. in division 4 East (With two games in hand).      It was 28 minutes before Risca broke down St Joe's defence (Although Risca had two tries disallowed). After a good line kicking by Rhys Carpenter Risca were camped in St Joe's 22 for most of the time, it was just reward for Ty Morris when he got the 5 points after being the stand out player, Carpenter took the extra's.

H.T. St Joe's nil Risca 7 Points.
Immediately from the kick off Risca were defending for their lives, once again Ty Morris was the outstanding player.   St Joe's had their reward with a well earned try.    Risca worked their way back into St Joe's half through Carpenter and Chad Bushell, and from a scrum 5 mts out Risca 's forwards drove over the line with the Captain Tim Barnes getting the touch down wide out  but the kick failed.   St Joe's were still well in the game and their forwards dominated for long periods.   Once again a long kick from Carpenter got St Joe's full back in trouble and failed to clear (Holding on), Rhys Morgan with a penalty 35 mts out, dancing through six or seven would be tacklers to get over for an excellent try. Carpenter kicked a good conversion.
But back came St Joe's to drive over for a try of their own , which they converted. With the game still in the balance and with 5 minutes left on the clock Carpenter took a long range penalty to seal the victory.
Man of the match (0n his birthday) was Ty Morris for an  outstanding all round  performance.
Next Saturday

Risca welcome Abertilley B.G. to town for the top of the league clash which could be a very tasty encounter.

Risca v Abertillery B.G.

Risca 13 pts  Abertillery B.G.18 pts.

Risca welcomed Abertillery B.G. to the Stores field last Saturday and were out muzzled by a very determined team and lost 13 pts to 18 pts. with Aber getting two tries to Risca's one penalty try.
Risca's Rhys Potter and Ty Morris came through a late fitness test and took their places at full back and blind side.
The opening was all Abertillery and their intent was always to run the ball wide at every chance, and they took their first chance after 5 minutes when a poor kick was taken in full flight by Aber's Alyd Penn who breezed over (With hardly a hand laid on him) for a scorching try wide out. the kick failed. the heavy Aber pack continued to dominate up front and forced Risca to concede possession and Aber's No 10 Gareth Edwards put over a good drop goal to increase their lead.
Risca started to get into the game and a pick up by Richard Evans and with Morris and Gareth Smith on his shoulder with some good inter passing causing havoc in Aber's defense, they conceded a penalty with Rhys Carpenter kicking a fine goal from 40 m.
Within 3 minutes Risca repeated the dose when Chad Bushell broke through and Aber conceded a further penalty for handling on the floor. Carpenter duly obliged.
It was Richard Evans again picking up at the back of the scrum and  running a good 30 m ,then  loosening his support and Aber cleared their line and with Risca starting to get the nudge on Aber's pack it was all Risca going into the interval. H.T. Risca 6 pts Aber 8 pts.

Straight after the interval a poor clearance kick put Aber's backs in possession and left wing Alyd Penn gave a repeat performance for another excellent try , which was converted.
Some good kicking by Carpenter had Risca camped on the Aber line and the consecutive 5 m scrums pushed over their line got Risca a penalty try converted by Carpenter. Then Risca contributed to their own down fall giving an easy penalty away. It was all Risca for the last ten minuets and Evans had an excellent try disallowed.  Risca's Man of the match. Richard Evans.

With three games left promotion is still in their own hands. Risca travel to Talywaun next Tuesday the 11th May for a evening K.O.

.

Talywain v Risca

Talywain 20 pts  Risca 26 pts.

Risca staged a superb fightback at Talywain last night to overhaul a very determined squad of players, after Talywain had forged ahead 13 pts to nil within the first 30 minutes, with Risca still on the bus.
Talywain bombarded Risca's line and just on 8 minutes Risca conceded a penalty for offside, a cracking try followed with the conversion and then another penalty just on the half hour. Just on the stroke of half time Risca's forwards with Ty Morris and Tim Barnes on the drive, the Wain conceded a penalty, Risca went for the scrum 5mt, Wain wheeled and pulled it down twice and on the third time of asking Risca's pack drove over for Richard Evans to touch down, Carpenter took the extras. H.T. Talywain 13 pts Risca 7 pts.

A few words of wisdom from head coach Chris Evans and with the Wain  pack fading, Risca's pack started to control the game and the front row of Nicky Davies, Owain Cooper and Sean Rees getting a good nudge at every scrum. Eight minutes into the second half a great kick up the line by Rhys Morgan put Risca with 10 mts of Talywains line. Risca's Tim Barnes pinched the lineout drove on the Wain conceded a scrum. Risca's scrum gained quick ball and Morgan went blind created a big hole in the Wain's defence and put Craig Thomas in for a cracking try, which was not converted. Within two minutes of the K.O. Morgan put Risca back on the Wain's ten mt line, and excellent catch and drive by Risca's front five and Ty Morris was under the posts for Carpenter to convert.
Talywain came straight back to Risca's line and forced a penalty try which was converted. With the game hanging in the balance at 20 pts to 19 pts to Talywain Risca replied with some great rugby, running from deep with Morgan creating the hole and Carpenter to Chad Bushell and to Steve Barnes to put Jamie Walker in the corner , with Carpenter converting from the touch line. Risca dug in and closed the game down for a great bonus point victory which puts them in touching distance of promotion.
Risca's man of the match could have been anyone of ten players, but young Rhys Morgan took the plaudits.

Risca are home to Old Illtydians on Saturday 15th May.

.

Risca v Old Illtydian

Risca 26 pts  Old Illtydians  17 pts

Chris Fraser and Alyn Evans  returned to the starting line up , and Rhys Potter came through a late fitness check after a bruising encounter at Talywain last Tuesday. Just on the seven minutes Chris Fraser caused havoc in the Old Illt's defence with a great run which forced the penalty which Rhys Carpenter converted from wide out.
But Old Illt's came straight back with a tap and go penalty from about 15 m which caught Risca sleeping and a costly try and conversion put Old Illt's in front.
But once again a brilliant run by right wing Fraser got Risca back into the game when Old Illit's would not release him after the tackle and Carpenter took the points.
Old Illt's did not look like a bottom of the league team, they dominated for long periods, but the Risca front five started to get on top just before the interval, with Mike Salideno and Tim Barnes getting some great ball.
Straight from the K.O. good handling by Chad Bushell and Steve Barnes gave Chris Fraser the half chance he wanted and he crashed through two would be tacklers to get a great try wide out, Carpenter converted from the touchline.
Old Illt's were not going quietly and bounced straight back with a try of their own, also converted .With Old Illt's back in front 17 pts to 13 pts it was game on and now the  Risca pack took over with the back row of Ty Morris, Phil Jones and the brilliant outstanding Alyn Evans. But Risca were still trying to play rugby in their own half instead of playing for territory, then one great kick by Carpenter put Risca right on the Old Illt's line a good catch and drive by Tim Barnes brought a penalty  and four scrums on the five m line should have rewarded Risca with a penalty try, but it was not to be. Two consecutive penalties by Carpenter  Just pushed Risca in front by two points, and then the introduction of David Jefferson at inside half proved the turning point and he immediately got through Old Illt's defence without a hand on him to go under the posts. Carpenter took the extras.
Risca moved into second place in the league. they play New Tredegar on Tuesday night at home K.O.7 pm.
Now with promotion garrented Risca need to win to be crowned Champions.
Man of the match the outstanding Alyn Evans.

Risca v New Tredegar.

RISCA PROMOTED AS CHAMPIONS.

Risca 19 pts New Tredegar 12 Pts.

Risca welcomed New Tredegar to the stores field for the final game of the season. With Risca already promoted it was the final push to be division 4 East Champions.
Martin Jones returned at lock, his first game for the 1st Fifteen since October last and that was against New Tredegar.  Leevan Fairlough and Richie Evans returned to the back row, and David Jefferson back at No 9.
Risca started well and from the K.O. Fairclough caught an excellent kick by Rhys Carpenter and Risca were putting New Tredegar under lots of pressure, and they conceded a penalty . the kick failed but from the restart the ball was straight to Chris Fraser and with an outrageous dummy skirted around two would be tacklers for an excellent try which was converted by Carpenter.

With no holds barred the play continued at a ferocious pace, and the next score went to New Tred and an excellent try it was, just on the half hour , great pace and determination by their inside half and the No 7 got the try under the posts which was converted.
H.T. Risca 7 pts New Tredegar 7 pts.

With only 4 minutes on the clock after the break New Tredegar went in front with lots of pressure up front they drove over for an unconverted try.
With the game slipping away Risca woke up and the forwards got their second wind. A big kick by Chad Bushell put Risca right on the 5mt line but the drive towards the line was stopped with the resulting scrum, Richie Evans going blind, Quick pass to David Jefferson and it was in the corner for a cracking try, the kick failed.
With the jitters easing and Risca exerting more pressure Risca's stand out back row worked Risca back to were they were. The repeat move of scrum--Evans and Jefferson was over for his second try, this time Carpenter converted from the touch line.  Risca held their nerve for the last ten minutes to close the game down and bring the end to an outstanding season.

The champagne  was flowing and Mr Ken Hewitt of the W.R.U. made the presentation to a very proud Captain Tim Barnes who had only missed one game out of the total 28 games played.

Risca R.F.C. players, the support team and Committee would like to sincerely thank its many loyal supporters who have followed the team home and away in such good numbers. A big thank you to stewardess Karen Martin and her girls, and many thanks to Margaret for her hard work in the kitchen.
